How to use the Search Console Page Indexing Analyzer

Read what the guide says

This is the Search Console Page Indexing Analyzer.

Turn your Page indexing export into a fix list: each reason, what it means,

the steps and the order.

In Search Console, open the Page indexing report and export the "Why pages aren't indexed" table,

or copy its rows, and add it here.

Or press Try an example to fill in sample details.

For a reason you want to dig into, open it,

export its example URLs and paste them under a line with the reason's name.

Work through "Do these first",

then click "Validate fix" in Search Console for each reason you fixed and wait for Google's email.

It reads only what you paste: it cannot see your Search Console account, Google's index or your live pages.

It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

Try it free on this page.

1. Add the "Why pages aren't indexed" table

In Search Console, open the Page indexing report, then export the table as CSV, or open it in Google Sheets and copy the rows with their header row.

One reason a line with its page count also works, for example "Soft 404 9".

2. Add example URLs (optional)

Open a reason in the report and export its examples. Paste each list under a line with the reason's name, and we group the URLs by folder, parameter and pagination.

A URL column with "Last crawled" next to it is fine too. Up to 20,000 URLs.

Runs in your browser. Your export is not uploaded, and we never sign in to Search Console.

About the Search Console Page Indexing Analyzer

Open or paste the "Why pages aren't indexed" table from the Page indexing report in Search Console and, if you have them, the example URLs for a reason. For each reason you see its page count, what Google says it means, whether it usually needs a fix (Google's word where it gives one, our measure where it does not), the steps and the order to work in. Example URLs are grouped by folder, parameter and pagination so you can spot the pattern behind a reason, and you can download them as a CSV. It runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and we never sign in to Search Console.

How it works

  1. Step 1

In Search Console, open the Page indexing report and export the "Why pages aren't indexed" table, or copy its rows, and add it here.

  2. Step 2

For a reason you want to dig into, open it, export its example URLs and paste them under a line with the reason's name.

  3. Step 3

Work through "Do these first", then click "Validate fix" in Search Console for each reason you fixed and wait for Google's email.

Not every page should be indexed

Google's aim is the canonical version of every important page in its index, not every URL on your site. Copies, alternate versions, redirecting URLs and pages you hide with noindex are meant to stay out, so a long "not indexed" list is not always bad news. The work is finding important pages under the wrong reason and fixing those first.

How we sort the reasons

Where Google's help says a reason needs nothing from you, such as "Alternate page with proper canonical tag", we mark it usually fine. Server errors, redirect errors, soft 404s and 403 blocks stop pages that should be indexed, so they come first. The rest depend on whether the pages are ones you want in Google, so we mark them to check. This order and the URL patterns are our measure, not Google's.

What this tool cannot do

It reads only what you paste: it cannot see your Search Console account, Google's index or your live pages. Search Console shows at most 1,000 example URLs for a reason, and not always every URL, so the patterns describe a sample. Use URL Inspection in Search Console for the exact state of one page, and the Indexability Checker to test what a page sends.

Frequently asked questions

What does "Crawled - currently not indexed" mean?

Google crawled the page but has not indexed it. Google says it may or may not be indexed later, and there is no need to resubmit it. Our suggestion: check the page is one you want in Google, give it useful content of its own, link to it from related pages and keep it in your sitemap. Merge or remove thin near-copies.

What does "Discovered - currently not indexed" mean?

Google knows the URL but has not crawled it yet. Google says it usually wanted to crawl it but expected that to overload the site, so it moved the crawl to later. Check that your server is quick and not returning errors, keep only pages you want crawled in your sitemap, and cut duplicate URLs such as filter and tracking versions. Google has also said that in most cases it is more about the site's overall quality.

Should I fix "Duplicate without user-selected canonical"?

Only if Google picked the wrong page. Google says this is not an error: it found copies, chose one as the canonical and shows that one. Inspect a URL in Search Console to see which page Google chose. If it is not the one you want, add a rel="canonical" link to your preferred URL on every copy, using the full address.

How do I tell Google I have fixed an issue?

Fix every page with that reason, open the reason in the Page indexing report and click "Validate fix". Search Console checks a few pages straight away and stops if the issue is still there. Validation usually takes up to about two weeks, sometimes longer, and Google emails you when it passes or fails. For one important page, use URL Inspection: Test live URL, then Request indexing.

Is a 404 in the Page indexing report a problem?

Not when the page was removed on purpose and has no replacement: Google says those 404s can be ignored. If the page moved, add a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one. Google may keep trying a 404 address for a while, so our suggestion is to also fix links on your own site that still point to it.
