Disavow File Generator: build a valid disavow.txt for Search Console
Turn a list of URLs or domains into a clean disavow.txt that fits Google's format and limits.

Most sites do not need a disavow file
- Google says that in most cases it can work out which links to trust by itself, and that using the disavow tool wrongly can harm how your site does in Google Search.
- Use it only if many spammy, artificial or low-quality links point to your site and they have caused a manual action, or likely will. Ask the sites to remove the links first.
- Do not disavow natural links, and do not add every backlink without looking at it.

About the Disavow File Generator
Paste the URLs or domains you have decided to disavow, or the sites you ticked in the Backlink Profile Analyzer, and add your current disavow file if the property already has one, because a new upload replaces it. The tool reads every line, removes repeats, turns URLs into domain: lines if you choose, moves notes to comment lines, leaves out your own site and big platforms, and checks Google's format and limits. You get disavow.txt to download and a list of everything it changed. It runs in your browser and never contacts Google: nothing you paste is uploaded. Most sites never need this file, so read the warning first.
How it works
-
Step 1
Read the warning at the top. Be sure the links are spammy and have caused a manual action, or likely will, and ask the sites to remove them first.
-
Step 2
Paste the URLs or domains, add your current disavow file and your property address, and choose single URLs or whole domains. Or try the example.
-
Step 3
Check "What changed" and every line of the file, download disavow.txt, and upload it in Search Console's disavow links tool for your URL-prefix property.
When to use a disavow file
Google says the disavow tool is an advanced feature that most sites do not need: in most cases Google works out which links to trust without help, and a wrong list can harm how a site does in Search. Google's advice is to use it only when a considerable number of spammy, artificial or low-quality links point to your site and they have caused a manual action, or likely will, for example because of paid links. For an "Unnatural links to your site" manual action, it asks you to get links removed or made nofollow first, disavow the rest, and not to disavow natural links.
The rules the file must follow
From Search Console Help: one URL or domain a line; a whole domain or subdomain is written as domain:example.com; lines that start with # are comments; the file is plain text in UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII, with a name ending in .txt; a URL can be at most 2,048 characters; and the file can have at most 100,000 lines, counting blank and comment lines, and be at most 2 MB. A subpath such as example.com/en/ cannot be disavowed. There is one list per property, a new upload replaces the old list, it applies to that property and its child properties, and the tool does not work with Domain properties.
What this tool cannot do
It does not decide which links are bad: that judgement is yours, and the Backlink Profile Analyzer only points to patterns worth a look. It does not upload anything to Search Console or check whether a page still links to you. When it removes a line because a domain: line in the file already names that domain or a parent domain, that rests on our reading of "domain or subdomain"; Google's page does not spell out how far a domain line reaches. Wildcards are not part of the format Google describes, so *.example.com is written as domain:example.com.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a disavow file?
Most sites do not. Google says it can usually work out which links to trust, and that disavowing wrongly can harm how your site does in Search. Consider it only if many spammy or paid links point to your site and they have caused a manual action, or likely will.
Should I disavow URLs or whole domains?
Google accepts both: a URL line names one page, and a domain: line is for a whole domain or subdomain. When every page of a site is spam, a domain: line saves lines; when only one page of a real site is the problem, keep the URL. Free blog hosts keep the subdomain, so one blog does not stand for the whole host.
What happens to my old disavow file?
Uploading a new file replaces the list already on that property. Paste your current file into the second box: the tool keeps its lines and comments, removes repeats and adds the new entries under a dated comment.
Can I disavow links for a Domain property?
No. Google's disavow tool does not support Domain properties, so upload the file to a URL-prefix property, such as https://www.example.com/. The list applies to that property and its child properties.
How long does a disavow file take to work?
Google says it can take a few weeks before a new list is taken into account. If you have a manual action, send a reconsideration request once you have removed what you could, explaining what you removed and what you could not.
