Tool kit, 8 steps in order

Launch your first Google Ads campaign: tools in the order to use them

Eight free tools in the order we suggest for a first Google Ads Search campaign. You work out what you can afford, plan where and for which searches to show, write and check the ads and the page they send people to, check your tracking, then pull it all into a launch plan and a Google Ads Editor file. None of the tools sign in to your Google Ads account.

Who it is for: Business owners and marketers setting up a first Search campaign, often for a local business.

The steps

The order is our suggestion. Skip a step you have already done, or come back to one later.

  1. Step 3: Google Ads tools

    Keyword Theme Grouper

Turn a keyword list into tightly themed ad groups, with informational searches set aside and words such as jobs and free flagged as negatives.

Then: Move keywords between groups until each group is about one service, then export the groups.

    You need: A keyword list

Open the tool: Keyword Theme Grouper
  2. Step 8: Google Ads tools

    Local Campaign Launch Wizard

Pull it together: four short steps give a full plan for a first local Search campaign, with settings, ad groups, ads, assets, a pre-launch checklist and the first 30 days.

Then: Download the Google Ads Editor file, import it into your account and go through the pre-launch checklist before the campaign goes live.

You need: Your business, services and areas

Open the tool: Local Campaign Launch Wizard

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Google Ads account to use these tools?

Not for most of them. The budget, location, keyword and ad text tools and the launch wizard work on what you type, and none of the tools sign in to Google Ads. You need an account to import the Google Ads Editor file and switch the campaign on.

What if my ad gets disapproved?

Use the Google Ads Policy Pre-check to find capitals, symbols, phone numbers and claims in your ad text, and the Suspension and Policy Appeal Helper to understand the message Google showed you and appeal with the right evidence.

Is this kit for Performance Max or Shopping campaigns?

It is built around a Search campaign. Our Google Ads tools page has tools for Performance Max assets, product feeds, Merchant Center issues and Demand Gen ads.
