About the Google Ads Tag and Consent Checker
Enter a page and we read its HTML and public Tag Manager container to find your Google Ads ID, the Google tag or Tag Manager, conversion events and enhanced conversions signals. We also check Consent Mode v2: the defaults for ad_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization and analytics_storage, the update, the order of the code and your consent banner. You get what to fix first and code to paste.
How it works
-
Step 1
Enter a landing page, or the thank-you page where your conversion fires.
-
Step 2
We fetch the page, read every Google tag and consent command in the HTML, and download the public Tag Manager container if the page has one.
-
Step 3
Fix the top items, then confirm in Google Tag Assistant: accept and reject your banner, and send a test conversion.
What Consent Mode v2 needs
Consent Mode passes a visitor's choice to Google tags. Version 2 added ad_user_data and ad_personalization to ad_storage and analytics_storage. Google asks for a default for all four before any tag sends data, then an update when the visitor chooses. Both new parameters must be granted for remarketing and other personalised ads, and Google needs these signals for visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland.
Tag Manager containers are read as indicators
A published Tag Manager container is a public file. We look in it for Google Ads conversion and remarketing tags, the conversion linker, user-provided data for enhanced conversions and consent settings. The file shows what is published, not which triggers fire, so we report these findings as indicators to confirm in Tag Manager.
What this tool cannot see
We only see the page HTML and the public container. Tags that a consent banner or script adds after the page loads, server-side tagging, tags fired as visitors move around a single-page app, and settings inside Google Ads, such as automatic enhanced conversions, are invisible to us. Use Google Tag Assistant to confirm what really fires.
Frequently asked questions
What is Consent Mode v2?
Consent Mode is how your consent banner tells Google tags what a visitor agreed to. Version 2 added two parameters, ad_user_data and ad_personalization, to the original ad_storage and analytics_storage. Google says both new parameters must be granted for personalised advertising such as remarketing, and ad_user_data covers measurement such as enhanced conversions. Google needs these signals for visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland.
Do Indian websites need Consent Mode?
If you advertise to people in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, Google needs consent signals for them. In India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 were notified in November 2025 with an 18-month phase-in, so most consent and notice duties apply from May 2027. Setting up a banner and Consent Mode now is good practice. This is general information, not legal advice.
Where should the Google tag go on the page?
Google asks you to paste the Google tag right after the opening <head> tag on every page, with only one Google tag per page; extra IDs are added with config lines or as destinations. The Tag Manager snippet goes as high in the <head> as possible, with its noscript part right after the opening <body>. Consent defaults must run before any tag sends data.
Why does Google Ads count a conversion for every page view?
A conversion event snippet that runs when a page loads counts every visit to that page. Google's page-load snippet belongs on the confirmation or thank-you page; for button clicks and calls, use the click version of the snippet or a Tag Manager trigger. If the snippet sits in a site-wide header or on a landing page, your conversion numbers and Smart Bidding will be wrong.
Do I still need a conversion linker tag in Tag Manager?
Google says a container that loads a Google tag or Destination tag on every page does not also need a conversion linker tag, and containers with Google Ads tags load a Google tag first when no Destination tag is connected. A Conversion Linker tag on all pages remains a safe setup. With gtag.js, linking is built in through the conversion_linker setting, which Google recommends leaving on.
