Prices are checked against this currency. In the cleaned feed, a price with no currency gets this one.

What we check

  • Required attributes, Google's length limits and duplicate IDs.
  • Accepted values for availability and condition, price and date formats, links and image types.
  • GTIN check digits, brand and MPN, sale prices, variants and categories.
  • India: GST in the price, MRP and shipping settings.

About the Merchant Center Feed Checker

Upload the product feed you send to Google Merchant Center, as a tab-separated, CSV or XML file, and see which products break Google's product data specification before you upload it. The checker looks at required attributes, length limits, availability and condition values, price and date formats, GTIN check digits, brand and MPN, sale prices and variants, plus the MRP and shipping rules for India. Download the issues as a CSV, or a cleaned feed with the safe fixes made. The file is read in your browser and is not uploaded.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Export your feed from your spreadsheet or shop as tab-separated text, CSV or XML, or copy the rows from Google Sheets, including the header row.

  2. Step 2

Drop the file here and choose the country you sell to. Start with the "do these first" list, then read the issues grouped by attribute and the list of products.

  3. Step 3

Fix what needs your judgement, download the cleaned feed for the safe fixes, check it, and upload it to Merchant Center.

What it checks

Every product needs id (up to 50 characters), title (up to 150), description (up to 5,000), link, image_link, availability and price. The checker tests those limits, the four availability values, new, refurbished and used for condition, prices written as a number and currency code such as 1299.00 INR, ISO 8601 dates, image file types, up to 10 additional images, GTIN check digits and the rules for brand, MPN and identifier_exists.

India: GST, MRP and shipping

For India, Google asks you to include GST in the price and not to use the tax attribute. India is one of the countries where Google requires shipping costs, which you can set in Merchant Center or in a shipping column. The optional maximum_retail_price attribute, for the MRP, is available only in India and must match your product page and checkout.

What this tool cannot do

It reads the file only. It does not open your product pages or images, so it cannot compare prices with your site, measure image sizes or spot watermarks, and it cannot see your Merchant Center settings. Capital letters and promotional words in titles are flagged by our own checklist. Google reviews every product after upload, so fix anything Merchant Center still reports.

Frequently asked questions

What attributes are required in a Google Merchant Center feed?

Every product needs id, title, description, link, image_link, availability and price. Others depend on the product: brand for new products, gtin when the manufacturer assigned one, mpn when there is no GTIN, condition for used and refurbished items, and availability_date for pre-orders and backorders. In the US, the UK and a few other countries, variants also need item_group_id.

How should I write the price in a Merchant Center feed?

Write the number followed by the three-letter ISO 4217 currency code, such as 1299.00 INR, without a rupee sign or thousands separators. The price must match your product page and checkout. For India, include GST in the price. If you run a sale, keep the regular price in price and put the lower price in sale_price.

Why does Merchant Center say my GTIN is invalid?

A GTIN has 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits, and its last digit is a check digit worked out from the others, so one mistyped digit makes the check fail. Numbers starting with 2, 02 or 04 are for in-store use, and those starting with 98, 99 or 05 are coupons. If a product has no GTIN, leave the field empty rather than making one up.

What should I put in brand for products I make myself?

Google asks you to use your store name as the brand when you make a product yourself and are its only seller, and to add your own product code as the MPN. Do not write N/A, Generic or No brand. Only when a new product has no GTIN and no brand and MPN should you set identifier_exists to no.

Is the cleaned feed safe to upload?

It only makes changes that need no judgement: Google's column names, trimmed spaces, availability and condition values such as "In Stock" rewritten as in_stock, prices such as ₹1,299 rewritten as 1299.00 INR, spaces removed from GTINs and spaces in links encoded. It never shortens titles or changes IDs, GTINs or dates. Open it in a spreadsheet and check it before you upload it.
