llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard
The llmstxt.org proposal describes a short Markdown guide to a website for language models. Google says Google Search does not use llms.txt and that the file neither helps nor harms your visibility there (Google's guide). This tool makes no claim that any AI search engine reads it.
Embed this tool on your websiteFree. Paste one code; it runs in your visitors' browsers.
Copy this code into a page of your site. The tool sets no cookies and sends nothing your visitors type to us. Change height="760" if it needs more room.
About the llms.txt Generator
Type your site's name and a short summary, then list your key pages in sections with a note on each, or paste your sitemap or a list of addresses and tick the pages to include. You get an llms.txt file in the format the llmstxt.org proposal describes, to copy or download, with checks on the links, notes and sections. llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard: Google says Google Search does not use it, and this tool makes no claim that any AI search engine reads it. It runs in your browser: nothing you type is uploaded.
How it works
-
Step 1
Type your site or business name, your website address and a summary of one or two sentences. Add more details, such as opening hours or the areas you serve, if you like.
-
Step 2
Add sections such as Services and Blog with your key pages, or paste your sitemap and tick the pages to include. Give each page a short note on what it covers.
-
Step 3
Fix anything the checks flag, download llms.txt and upload it to the root of your site, so it opens at yoursite.com/llms.txt.
What goes in an llms.txt file
The llmstxt.org proposal, published by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI in September 2024, describes a Markdown file at /llms.txt: a heading with the name of the site, which is the only required part; a short summary in a quote block; optional paragraphs or lists with more detail; and sections under smaller headings that list links, each with an optional note after a colon. A section named Optional holds links that can be skipped when a reader needs a shorter version.
A proposal, not a standard
Google's guide to its generative AI features says you do not need AI text files or Markdown to appear in Google Search, that Search does not use llms.txt, and that keeping one for other services is fine. Chrome's Lighthouse has an informational llms.txt audit among its agentic browsing checks, and it marks a missing file as not applicable. This tool makes no claim that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or any other AI search engine reads the file.
What this tool cannot do
It does not open your website or fetch your sitemap: paste the sitemap's text or a list of addresses, and it reads up to 2,000 of them, a limit we set. It cannot tell whether a page works, redirects or is noindex, and it does not make the Markdown copies of your pages that the proposal also suggests. The file does not let crawlers in or keep them out: robots.txt does that.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an llms.txt file?
No, it is optional. Google says Google Search does not use it and that it neither helps nor harms your visibility there, and this tool makes no claim that any AI search engine reads it. Make one if you want a short, tidy guide to your site for tools and agents that look for the file.
Where do I upload llms.txt?
At the root of your site, so it opens at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt, as the proposal describes. On most hosting you can upload it with cPanel's File Manager or FTP into the folder that holds your home page. It is a plain text file, so any text editor can open it.
Which pages should I list?
Our suggestion: the pages that explain your business best, such as your main services or products, prices, the areas you serve, how to contact or book, and your most useful guides, each with a short note. Leave out admin, cart, login, thank-you and search pages. Put pages that are nice to have, such as older blog posts or policies, under Optional.
Does llms.txt replace robots.txt or my sitemap?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers which pages they may fetch, and an XML sitemap lists your pages for search engines. llms.txt is a short guide written for language models, and it does not allow or block anything. Use the Robots.txt Generator and the XML Sitemap Generator for those files.
How often should I update it?
Whenever you add, rename or remove a key page, so the links keep working. Our suggestion is to check it each time you update your sitemap. The tool keeps your draft in this browser, so you can come back and edit it.
