About the Google Ads Search Terms Analyzer

Upload your Google Ads search terms report and see how much went on searches that never converted. The tool breaks every search term into one-, two- and three-word n-grams, suggests phrase and exact match negatives that never block a search that converted or one of your keywords, and checks your current negatives for conflicts. Copy the list for Google Ads or download a Google Ads Editor file; the report never leaves your browser.

How it works

  1. Step 1

In Google Ads, select Campaigns, then Insights and reports › Search terms, pick a date range and download the report as CSV. Performance Max search terms reports work too.

  2. Step 2

Drop the file here or paste the table. Optionally add your target CPA, the spend or clicks that count as waste, your current negatives and your keywords.

  3. Step 3

Review the suggested negatives, untick anything you sell, then copy them for Google Ads or download the CSV for Google Ads Editor.

How the suggestions stay safe

A word or phrase is only suggested as a negative when no search term containing it converted and it would not block one of your keywords. Words that appear in converting searches are marked "appears in converting terms" instead, so you fix bids or ads rather than lose enquiries. Searches that convert at more than twice your target CPA are listed for review, unticked.

How negative match types work

Negatives behave differently from keywords. A broad match negative blocks searches that contain all of its words in any order, a phrase match negative blocks searches that contain its words in that order, and an exact match negative blocks only that exact search. Google says negatives do not match close variants such as plurals or synonyms, so add "job" and "jobs" separately. The conflict check uses the same rules.

What the tool cannot do

It only sees the search terms in your report, and Google leaves out searches that too few people made, for privacy. It cannot tell whether a search fits your business, only whether it converted, and it cannot model misspellings, which Google says negatives already cover. Check every suggestion before you add it, especially in Performance Max, where Google recommends using negatives sparingly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the search terms report in Google Ads?

It lists the searches people made that triggered your ads, with the keyword that matched, the match type, and clicks, cost and conversions. Find it by selecting Campaigns, then Insights and reports › Search terms. Google leaves out searches made by too few people, for privacy. It is the best source of negative keywords because it shows exactly which searches you paid for.

How do I find negative keywords from search terms?

Sort the report by cost and look for searches with spend and no conversions, then look for words that repeat across them, such as jobs, free or course. Repeated words make good phrase match negatives; one-off irrelevant searches make good exact match negatives. This tool does both and skips any word that also appears in a search that converted, so you do not block enquiries.

What is n-gram analysis in Google Ads?

N-gram analysis splits every search term into single words and runs of two and three words, then adds up the clicks, cost and conversions of all the searches that contain each one. It shows patterns a line-by-line review misses: "salary" might cost little in each search, but add up to thousands of rupees across dozens of searches with no conversions.

Should I use phrase or exact match for negative keywords?

Use phrase match for a word or phrase that is never relevant, such as "jobs" or "free": it blocks every search containing those words in that order. Use exact match to block one specific search without affecting longer or related ones. Broad match negatives block searches that contain all the words in any order. None of them block plurals or synonyms.

Can I add negative keywords to Performance Max campaigns?

Yes. Google Ads lets you add up to 10,000 negative keywords to a Performance Max campaign, apply negative keyword lists, or use account-level negatives. They apply to Search and Shopping inventory only. Google recommends using them sparingly, for brand safety or clearly irrelevant searches, so review each suggestion from a Performance Max search terms report before you add it.
