About the GST Invoice Checker

Type the details printed on one of your tax invoices: your name, address, GSTIN, State and turnover band, the invoice number and date, the buyer, the place of supply, each item with its HSN code, value and GST rate, the tax amounts and the total. The checker lists what Rule 46 of the CGST Rules asks for that is missing, tests the invoice number and the GSTIN format, checks the HSN digits your turnover needs, says whether the supply needs CGST plus SGST or IGST from the two States, and checks that the tax and the total add up. You get the fixes worst first and the tax split the invoice should carry. It runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded.

What Rule 46 asks for

Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, 2017 lists what a tax invoice from a registered person must show, including: the supplier's name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive serial number of up to 16 characters, using letters, numbers, hyphens or dashes and slashes, unique for the financial year; the date; the recipient's name, address and GSTIN if registered (and, for an unregistered buyer, the name, address and delivery address with the State's name and code when the taxable value is ₹50,000 or more); the HSN code for goods or the accounting code for services; a description; the taxable value after discounts; the rate and amount of each tax; the place of supply with the State's name for supplies between States; whether tax is payable on reverse charge; and the signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised representative.

CGST and SGST, or IGST

When you and the place of supply are in the same State, the supply carries CGST plus SGST (or UTGST), charged at equal rates. When they are in different States, it carries IGST at a rate equal to the two added together. The checker compares your State with the place of supply, works out the tax from each item's value and rate, and flags the wrong type of tax, unequal CGST and SGST, and tax or totals that are off by more than ₹1 (our check).

What this checker cannot do

It checks the details you type, not your billing software, and it sees one invoice, so it cannot tell whether a number is unique or in sequence. It checks the GSTIN's format, not its check character or whether it is registered. It does not tell you the GST rate or HSN code for a product, or whether e-invoicing applies to you, and it does not cover exports, supplies to SEZ units, bills of supply or credit notes. It is not tax advice: check with your CA.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a GST invoice number be?

Rule 46 of the CGST Rules allows a serial number of up to 16 characters, made of letters, numbers, hyphens or dashes and slashes, in one or more series, and unique for a financial year. Spaces, underscores, hashes and other symbols are not in that list. A number such as DR/26-27/0145 fits; DESIROOTS/2026-27/000145 is too long.

When do I charge IGST instead of CGST and SGST?

When you and the place of supply are in different States, the supply is between States and carries IGST. When both are in the same State, it carries CGST plus SGST (or UTGST), split equally. Pick the place of supply with care, and ask your CA about unusual orders.

Can the checker tell if a GSTIN is real?

No. It checks the format CBIC describes: 15 characters, starting with the two-digit State code and then the 10-character PAN, followed by an entity code and a check character, and that the PAN part looks like a PAN (our check). It does not test the check character or whether the GSTIN is registered and active; ask your CA to confirm those.

How many HSN digits must my invoice show?

Under CBIC Notification 78/2020-Central Tax, from 1 April 2021, it depends on your aggregate turnover in the previous financial year: up to ₹5 crore, 4 digits, and you may leave the code off invoices to unregistered buyers; more than ₹5 crore, 6 digits on every tax invoice. Pick your turnover band and the checker tests each item against it. Your CA can tell you which code fits each product.

Is this tax advice?

No. The checker follows Rule 46 of the CGST Rules and CBIC's rules on CGST, SGST and IGST, and says which checks are our own. It does not cover e-invoicing. Ask your CA before you rely on it for rates, HSN codes, the place of supply or e-invoicing, or before you correct an invoice already issued.
