LinkedIn Post Formatter: bold, italic, bullets and a feed preview

Turn bold, italic and bullet lists into LinkedIn-ready text, with a count, a feed preview and checks.

For LinkedIn

How to use the LinkedIn Post Formatter

Read what the guide says

This is the LinkedIn Post Formatter.

Turn bold, italic and bullet lists into LinkedIn-ready text, with a count,

a feed preview and checks.

Type or paste your post. Use the Bold, Italic and List buttons, or type **bold**,

_italic_ and a dash at the start of a line. Or try the example.

Or press Try an example to fill in sample details.

Choose styled letters or plain text and a bullet,

then read the feed preview on a phone and a computer to see what shows before "see more".

Fix what the checks flag,

copy the text for LinkedIn and paste it into a new post. Type each @mention again in LinkedIn and pick the person from the list.

It does not sign in to LinkedIn, so it cannot post for you, add real mentions or see how a post performs.

It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

Try it free on this page.

Runs in your browser. Your post is saved only in this browser.

Write **bold**, _italic_ or ***both***; start a line with - for a bullet or 1. for a numbered point. Empty lines stay as you type them.

Bold and italic as

Styled letters are not real bold. The tool uses Unicode maths letters that look bold or italic. Screen readers may read them by symbol name or skip them, and search may not find those words. W3C's MathML specification says these letters should not be used for styled text. Our suggestion: a short heading or a few key words at most, or choose Plain text.

Write or paste your post

The character count, a feed preview with the "see more" cut and the text ready to paste show here as you type. Not sure where to start? Press "Try an example".

In your website's editor, add an HTML block where you want the tool, and paste the code.

In WordPress, that's the Custom HTML block.

If the tool needs more room, change the height in the code.

Publish the page, and the tool works on your site.

Here, it's on a sample page for a made-up sweet shop.

Visitors use it right there. It sets no cookies, and sends nothing they type to us.

The credit line under it links to the tool on DigitalSnot.

You can embed as many of our free browser tools as you like.

How it works

  1. Type or paste your post. Use the Bold, Italic and List buttons, or type **bold**, _italic_ and a dash at the start of a line. Or try the example.

  2. Choose styled letters or plain text and a bullet, then read the feed preview on a phone and a computer to see what shows before "see more".

  3. Fix what the checks flag, copy the text for LinkedIn and paste it into a new post. Type each @mention again in LinkedIn and pick the person from the list.

About the LinkedIn Post Formatter

Write your post with simple marks: **bold**, _italic_, a dash for each bullet and empty lines where you want space. You get the post ready to paste into LinkedIn, with bold and italic as Unicode letters (or plain text if you prefer), bullet characters and your line breaks kept. It counts the post against LinkedIn's 3,000-character limit, shows a feed preview with where "see more" is likely to fall (our estimate), counts hashtags and mentions, and checks long paragraphs, hashtags inside sentences, links and lines in capitals. It runs in your browser and never signs in to LinkedIn.

What LinkedIn says

LinkedIn Help says a post can have up to 3,000 characters, and suggests an article on LinkedIn for longer text. You add a hashtag by typing # and the word or phrase in your post. A mention works when you type @ and pick the person or Page from the list that appears, so an @name pasted as plain text is not a mention until you pick it again. When a post has a link, LinkedIn shows a preview from that page, with an image frame of 1.91:1 (1200 x 627 pixels).

Styled letters and accessibility

The bold and italic this tool makes are Unicode maths letters that look bold or italic, so they keep their look when pasted. W3C's MathML specification says these letters should not be used for styled text, because it causes problems for searching and restyling, including for accessibility. Some screen readers read each one by its symbol name and some skip it. The tool keeps links, hashtags and @mentions in plain letters, counts your styled words, and has a plain text option. Our suggestion: a short heading or a few key words at most.

What this tool cannot do

It does not sign in to LinkedIn, so it cannot post for you, add real mentions or see how a post performs. LinkedIn does not publish where "see more" cuts a post or how it counts characters, so the cut is our estimate and we count characters as you see them, with each line break as one; styled letters take two storage units each, and the tool warns when that could matter. The paragraph, hashtag and capitals checks are our checklist, not LinkedIn rules.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write bold text in a LinkedIn post?

Type the words between two asterisks, like **Results are out**, or select them and press Bold, and copy the result. The tool swaps the letters for Unicode letters that look bold, which keep their look when pasted. Use them for a short heading or a few words: screen readers may read them badly, and search may not find them.

How many characters can a LinkedIn post have?

LinkedIn Help says up to 3,000 characters; for longer text it suggests writing an article. This tool counts characters as you see them, with each line break as one. Styled letters take two storage units each, so if your post is close to the limit and full of bold, keep a margin or switch to plain text.

Where does LinkedIn cut a post with "see more"?

LinkedIn does not publish it, and it changes with the screen and app version. Our estimate is about three lines: roughly 42 characters a line on a phone and 80 on a computer. The preview shows that cut, so put the point of the post in its first line.

Why did my @mention not work after pasting?

LinkedIn makes a mention when you type @ and pick the person or Page from the list that appears (LinkedIn Help). Text pasted from somewhere else stays plain, even with an @ in front. After pasting, delete each @name, type @ and the first letters again, and pick the right person.

Should I put hashtags at the end of a LinkedIn post?

LinkedIn Help only says you add a hashtag by typing # and the word or phrase in your post. Our checklist suggests writing sentences in plain words and grouping hashtags at the end, because hashtags in the middle break up the text. Join multi-word hashtags without spaces or hyphens, such as #BoardResults.
