Instagram Bio and Font Builder: bio count, preview and letter styles

Count your bio against Instagram's 150 characters, preview your profile and style a word or two.

For Instagram

How to use the Instagram Bio and Font Builder

Read what the guide says

This is the Instagram Bio and Font Builder.

Count your bio against Instagram's 150 characters, preview your profile and style a word or two.

Type your name, username, category, bio lines, a call to action and your link,

and open your profile photo if you like. Or try the example.

Or press Try an example to fill in sample details.

Watch the count and the profile preview as you type,

and fix what the bio checklist flags: a missing place, audience or call to action.

Type a word or two under Letter styles,

copy the style you want or put it in your bio,

then copy the bio and paste it into Edit profile in the app.

It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

Try it free on this page.

  • Free to use
  • Runs in your browser
  • No sign-up

Runs in your browser. Your profile is saved only in this browser, and the photo is never uploaded.

Shown in bold above your bio. For Meta Verified profiles, Instagram Help says the name can be changed twice every 14 days.

You pick the category from Instagram's list in the app; it shows under your name if you choose to display it.

Instagram allows up to 150 characters, including the call to action below.

Type your name and bio

The character count and a preview of your profile header show here as you type. Not sure where to start? Press "Try an example".

Letter styles for a word or two

Type the words to style, then copy them or put them in your bio. These are special Unicode characters, not a font, so they look the same wherever they are pasted.

Screen readers may read these letters badly or not at all. Some read each one by its symbol name, such as "mathematical bold capital K", and some skip it. Search inside Instagram may not find them either, because they are different characters from the ones people type.

W3C's MathML specification says these maths letters should not be used for styled text, as it causes problems for searching and restyling, including for accessibility. Our suggestion: style a word or two in the bio at most, never your name or the whole bio, and never your phone number.

How it works

  1. Type your name, username, category, bio lines, a call to action and your link, and open your profile photo if you like. Or try the example.

  2. Watch the count and the profile preview as you type, and fix what the bio checklist flags: a missing place, audience or call to action.

  3. Type a word or two under Letter styles, copy the style you want or put it in your bio, then copy the bio and paste it into Edit profile in the app.

About the Instagram Bio and Font Builder

Type your name, username, category, bio lines, a call to action and your link. You get the bio's length against Instagram's 150-character limit, a preview of your profile header with your photo, name, category, bio and link, and our bio checklist: what you do, where, for whom and one call to action. A letter styles panel turns a word or two into bold, italic, script, double-struck, monospace or small caps letters you can copy, with a clear warning about screen readers and search. It runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded and the tool never signs in to Instagram.

What Instagram says about bios and names

Instagram Help says a bio can be up to 150 characters, and that you edit the bio, name, username and website together in Edit profile. A professional account can show its category label under the name, and you can show or hide it. For Meta Verified profiles, Instagram Help says the profile name can be updated twice every 14 days. Meta's Transparency Centre lists how closely the search words match an account's username or profile name as one factor in Instagram search, and Instagram suggests putting words about who you are and what your profile is about in the bio.

Why the warning about fancy fonts

The bold, italic, script and other styles are not a font. They are separate Unicode characters, mostly from the block of letters meant for maths, so they look the same wherever you paste them. W3C's MathML specification says these maths letters should not be used for styled text, because it causes problems for searching and restyling, including for accessibility. Some screen readers read each letter by its symbol name and some skip it, and people searching in the app type plain letters. That is why our suggestion is a word or two in the bio, never the name, the whole bio or a phone number.

What this tool cannot do

It does not sign in to Instagram, so it cannot change your profile, see your real category list or check whether a username is free. Instagram does not say how it counts characters, so we count them as you see them, with each line break as one, and also show the storage units, where each styled letter takes two. The checklist looks for words, such as a city or "for", so it can miss what you wrote in your own way. The preview is our approximation, and the app changes with screen size and version.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can an Instagram bio have?

Instagram Help says up to 150 characters. This tool counts characters as you see them, so an emoji or a Hindi syllable counts once and a line break counts as one. If you use styled letters, the app may count more, because each styled letter takes two storage units; the tool warns you when that could push the bio over.

Are fancy fonts in an Instagram bio bad?

They are not banned, but they have costs. Screen readers may read each styled letter by its symbol name or skip it, and search inside the app matches the plain letters people type. W3C's MathML specification says these maths letters should not be used for styled text. Our suggestion: a word or two in the bio, never your name, the whole bio or your phone number.

How often can I change my Instagram name?

Instagram Help publishes a limit for Meta Verified profiles: the profile name can be updated twice every 14 days, and once you reach that you wait before the next change. We did not find a published limit for other accounts, so settle on the name before you change it, and keep it in plain letters so people can find you.

What should an Instagram bio for a business say?

Our checklist: what you do, where you are (or that you deliver across India), who it is for, and one call to action such as "Order on WhatsApp". Instagram itself suggests putting words about who you are and what your profile is about in the bio. Put your link in the website field rather than typing it into the bio.

Can I show my business category under my name?

Yes, on a professional account. Instagram Help says you can display or hide the category label after setup, from Edit profile or, on the web, from the professional account settings. You choose the category from Instagram's own list in the app; this tool only shows it in the preview.
