Link Preview Checker for WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn and X

See the tags and share image apps use for link previews, judged against each platform's rules.

For Facebook LinkedIn X WhatsApp

Read what the guide says

This is the Link Preview Checker.

It shows what WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn and X get when someone shares your page.

Use it before you share a page, an offer or a blog post, and after you change its image.

Enter the address of the page you want to share, such as a product or a blog post.

Here, we press Try an example: a sample page for a made-up clinic.

Press Check preview. We read the page's tags and download the share image.

The score is our checklist's measure. Start with the box below it.

Here, number one: there's no twitter:card tag, which X needs to choose a card.

And the share image is smaller than Facebook recommends.

These sketches show how the preview could look in each app.

Each app draws its own layout, so treat them as a guide.

Platform by platform judges the page against each app's own published rules.

Open How to fix to see why it matters and the steps.

Here, add a twitter:card tag with the value summary_large_image.

Below, the share image section shows its format, size in pixels and file size.

Or copy the suggested tags, and paste them into your page's head.

Then refresh the preview with Facebook's Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn's Post Inspector.

You can also email yourself a PDF of the result.

How it works

  1. Enter the address of the page you want to share, such as a product, an offer or a blog post.

  2. We read the page's tags, download the share image and check both against the rules Facebook, LinkedIn, X and WhatsApp publish.

  3. Fix what is flagged, paste the suggested tags, then refresh the preview with Facebook's Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn's Post Inspector.

About the Link Preview Checker

Enter a page and see what WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn and X get when someone shares it: the og:title, og:description, og:image and twitter:card tags, and the share image itself. We download the image and check that it loads, its format, its size in pixels, its shape and its file size against each platform's published rules, sketch the previews, and give you the tags to paste into your page.

The tags apps read

The Open Graph protocol asks every page for og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url, and adds og:description and og:image:alt. X reads its own twitter: tags and falls back to the Open Graph ones, but needs twitter:card to choose a card. WhatsApp asks for og:title, og:description and og:url in the page's head, and an absolute image address.

Share image sizes

Facebook recommends at least 1200 × 630 pixels, close to a 1.91:1 shape, and shows images under 600 × 315 as a small square. LinkedIn asks for at least 1200 × 627 and up to 5 MB. X's large image card uses a 2:1 shape, up to 5 MB, and does not accept SVG. WhatsApp asks for under 600 KB and at least 300 pixels wide. A 1200 × 630 JPG under 600 KB fits all four.

What this tool cannot do

We read the HTML your server sends us, without running JavaScript, so tags added by scripts are not seen. Each app builds its own preview and may change its layout or leave out the image, so the sketches are a guide. Apps also keep old previews: refresh them with Facebook's Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn's Post Inspector after a change.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my link show no image on WhatsApp?

The usual causes are a missing og:image tag, a relative image address such as /images/share.jpg, an image over the 600 KB WhatsApp asks for, or tags placed outside the page's head. WhatsApp also asks for og:title, og:description and og:url, and says it makes previews on a best-effort basis. Run the check to see which of these applies to your page.

What size should an Open Graph image be?

Use 1200 × 630 pixels. That is the size Facebook recommends for high-resolution screens, it meets LinkedIn's minimum of 1200 × 627, and its shape is close to the 1.91:1 both use. Save it as a JPG or PNG under 600 KB so WhatsApp shows it too, and keep text away from the edges in case an app crops it.

How do I update a link preview after changing the image?

Apps keep a copy of each preview. For Facebook, upload the new image under a new file name, because Facebook caches images by their address, then run the page through the Sharing Debugger. For LinkedIn, use the Post Inspector. On both, posts already shared keep the old preview: only new shares show the change.

Do I need twitter: tags as well as Open Graph tags?

Usually just one. X falls back to og:title, og:description and og:image when its own tags are missing, but it needs a twitter:card tag to know which card to show. Add a twitter:card tag with the value summary_large_image for a large image card. Add twitter:title or twitter:image only if you want X to show something different.

Does Google use Open Graph tags?

In some places. Google says og:image is one of the sources it uses to choose a page's preview image, og:site_name is one of the things it considers for the site name shown in results, and og:title is among the sources for title links. For the site name, Google says WebSite structured data matters most.
