About the Engagement Rate Calculator

Work out engagement rate for one post, a month of posts or a whole export. Enter likes, comments, shares and saves with reach, views or followers, and see every common rate side by side, with the one that matches the platform's own analytics marked: LinkedIn and X divide by impressions and count clicks, while Instagram, Facebook and YouTube show no engagement rate. Paste or upload a table of posts to see your median rate, your best and weakest posts, and which post types and days do best. It runs in your browser.

Three ways to work it out

By reach: interactions ÷ people who saw the post, which compares posts fairly. By impressions or views: interactions ÷ times shown, the way LinkedIn and X report it, where clicks count too. By followers: interactions per post ÷ followers, which you can work out for any account but which falls as an account grows. Interactions are likes or reactions, comments, shares and saves.

What each platform shows

LinkedIn page analytics define engagement rate as clicks, reactions, comments, reposts and follows divided by impressions. X divides engagements, which include clicks anywhere on the post, by impressions. Instagram Insights shows reach and interactions (likes, comments, saves and shares) but no engagement rate, and neither Facebook nor YouTube Studio shows one, so rates for them are a convention rather than a platform figure.

What this tool cannot do

It cannot read your accounts: it works on the numbers you enter or the export you paste. Other tools use other formulas, so a rate here may not match theirs, and there is no official benchmark for a good rate. Platforms also change how they count: since 24 August 2026 YouTube counts a view as soon as a video starts to play. Compare your own posts over time.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate engagement rate?

Add up likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by reach, impressions or followers, and multiply by 100. A post with 325 interactions and 6,120 accounts reached has a 5.3% engagement rate by reach. There is no single official formula, so choose one, say which one you use, and keep it the same when you compare posts or months.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

There is no official figure: Instagram does not show an engagement rate or publish a benchmark, and published averages use different formulas and samples. The useful comparison is with your own posts. Use the "Many posts" mode to find your median rate, then look at the posts well above it and make more like them.

Should I use reach or followers to calculate engagement rate?

Use reach when you have it. It counts the people who actually saw the post, so it compares posts fairly, including posts shown to people who do not follow you. Followers are easier to get, for example for a competitor's account, but only some followers see each post, so the rate by followers can fall as an account grows.

How does LinkedIn calculate engagement rate?

LinkedIn page analytics show engagement rate as the number of interactions plus clicks and followers acquired, divided by impressions. In other words: clicks, reactions, comments, reposts and follows from a post, divided by the times it was shown. Choose LinkedIn in this tool and enter the clicks and follows to get the same figure.

Which post export can I upload?

Any table with a header row, as a CSV file or pasted from a spreadsheet. We read columns named Likes or Reactions, Comments, Shares, Saves, Clicks, Follows, Reach, and Impressions or Views, plus Date, Type and Caption if they are there. If a column is not picked up, rename its header to one of these names and try again.

Instagram, Facebook and YouTube show no engagement rate of their own, so the rates for them follow a common formula rather than a platform figure.
