How it works
-
Paste your post with its line breaks, emoji, hashtags and links, and add the name to show on the previews. Or try the example.
-
Choose the platforms you post on, and tick X Premium if you have it. Each platform shows its count, what is left and a preview cut where "more" falls.
-
Read the summary and the checks. If the post is too long somewhere, copy the shorter version, or edit your post until every platform fits.
About the Social Post Preview and Character Counter
Paste one post and see it counted for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X and Threads: the characters used and left against each platform's published limit, X's own weighted count with every link as 23, the Threads count with emojis counted by their bytes, and the hashtags, mentions and links in it. A phone-style preview shows where each feed cuts the post with "more" (our estimate). A summary says where the post fits, and gives a shorter version that fits every platform you chose, ready to copy. It runs in your browser and never signs in to any account.
The limits and how each is counted
LinkedIn Help gives a post up to 3,000 characters. Meta's developer documentation gives an Instagram caption up to 2,200 characters and 20 @ mentions, and a Threads post up to 500 characters with emojis counted as their UTF-8 bytes; Instagram Help allows up to 5 hashtags on a post. X's developer documentation sets 280 with weights: most letters count 1, emojis and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters 2, and every link 23; X Premium allows up to 25,000. Facebook publishes no post length we could verify, so it shows a count only. Elsewhere we count characters as you see them.
The previews and the shorter version
Each preview wraps the post at about 42 characters a line and cuts it after about two lines on Instagram (with your username first), five on Facebook and three on LinkedIn: our estimate, not a platform rule. Our preview shows X and Threads posts in full. The shorter version keeps your sentences in order while they fit, then your first link and up to two hashtags (one when Threads is chosen, as Threads allows one topic per post), and cuts a sentence only if it has to.
What this tool cannot do
It does not sign in, post for you, or show how a link card or image will look; the Link Preview Checker does that for links. WhatsApp publishes no length for channel updates or status text that we could verify, so it is not included. Where an app cuts a post depends on the screen and the app version, and each app's own counter is final, especially for Hindi letters with vowel signs.
Frequently asked questions
How does X count characters?
X's developer documentation says a post can have 280 characters, counted with weights. Most Latin and Devanagari letters, digits and punctuation count as 1, emojis count as 2 whatever their skin tone or other modifiers, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2, and every link counts as 23 because X shortens it. Photos and GIFs don't count. X Premium subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters.
What is the character limit for a Threads post?
Meta's developer documentation for Threads gives 500 characters for a text post and says emojis count as their number of UTF-8 bytes, so most emojis use 4 and some 6 or more. It also says a post with more than 5 links fails. Threads Help says you can tag one topic per post.
Is there a character limit for Facebook posts?
We could not find one on Facebook's help pages or Meta's developer pages, so the tool shows the count without a limit. The preview shows where the feed may cut a long post with "See more", by our estimate, so put the main point and any offer in the first lines.
How long can a LinkedIn post be?
LinkedIn Help says the character limit for a post is 3,000 characters. For longer pieces it suggests writing an article, which can be up to 125,000 characters. LinkedIn does not say where "see more" cuts a post, so the preview shows our estimate.
Why does the tool count Hindi differently from the app?
For most platforms the tool counts characters as you see them, so a Hindi syllable with its vowel sign counts once, and so does an emoji. X counts each Devanagari letter and vowel sign as 1, so a syllable can count as 2 or 3 there, and the tool follows X's rules for X. The other apps do not say how they count, and their own counter is final, so leave some room when a post is close to a limit.
