About the Word and Character Counter

Type or paste any text in English, Hindi or Hinglish. You get words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, reading and speaking time, unique and repeated words and phrases, the longest sentence and the share of English and Devanagari letters. Hindi letters are counted as you see them, so a conjunct such as "स्ते" counts once. Your text is also checked against the character limits that Google Ads, YouTube, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and Merchant Center publish. It runs in your browser, and your text is not uploaded.

How it works

  1. 01

Type or paste your text into the box, or press Try an example to see a Diwali post in English, Hindi and Hinglish.

  2. 02

Read the counts as they update. Change the reading and speaking speeds if your readers or your voice are faster or slower.

  3. 03

Check the character limits for the place the text will go. For a list of ad headlines or titles, pick a limit to check each line.

How we count

A word is a group of letters or digits between spaces, so "check-up", "₹7,500" and an email address count as one word each. Characters are the letters you see, worked out with your browser's text segmenter, so the Hindi word "नमस्ते" is 3 characters, not the 6 Unicode characters it is stored as. Sentences end with a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or the danda (।). Reading and speaking time use 200 and 130 words a minute, which is our measure, and you can change both.

Platform limits

Each limit comes from the platform's own page. Google Ads Help gives 30 characters for a responsive search ad headline and 90 for a description, YouTube Help gives 100 for a video title and 5,000 for a description, X allows 280 for a post, Meta's developer documentation gives 2,200 for an Instagram caption, and LinkedIn Help gives 3,000 for a post. Google says there is no limit on how long a meta description or page title can be, but it cuts them in search results to fit the screen.

What this tool cannot do

Platforms do not all say how they count Hindi letters with vowel signs, emoji or line breaks, so the platform's own counter has the final say. For limits we count Unicode characters, which is the higher count for Hindi. Repeated words are shown for information only: there is no right number of times to use a word. The tool does not check spelling, grammar or facts, and it does not write or change your text.

Frequently asked questions

How are Hindi characters counted?

A Hindi letter is often stored as more than one Unicode character: a consonant, a vowel sign and sometimes a virama (्) that joins two letters. This tool shows the letters you see, counted with your browser's text segmenter, so "नमस्ते" is 3. For platform limits it uses the Unicode count, which is higher, because the platforms do not say how they count Hindi. Under X's counting rules each of those Unicode characters counts as 1.

How long can a Google Ads headline be?

Google Ads Help gives 30 characters for each responsive search ad headline, 90 for each description and 15 for each display URL path. Characters in double-width languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean count as 2. To check a list of headlines at once, put one on each line and pick "Responsive search ad headline" under Check each line against a limit.

What is the character limit for a meta description?

Google says there is no limit on how long a meta description can be, but the snippet is cut in search results as needed, typically to fit the device width. The same is true of page titles, and Google asks you to avoid long, wordy titles. Use our SERP Preview tool to see roughly where yours may be cut.

How is reading time worked out?

The number of words divided by a speed: 200 words a minute for reading and 130 for speaking aloud. These speeds are our measure, not a standard, and people read at different speeds. Change them in the tool, for example by timing yourself reading part of a YouTube script aloud.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

Your text is not uploaded. It is counted in your browser and kept in this browser's storage, so it is still there when you come back. Press Clear to remove it. In a private window it may not be kept.
