About the Google Docs to Clean HTML Converter

Paste a draft from Google Docs, Word or a web page. The tool reads the formatting that comes with it and writes clean HTML: headings, paragraphs, lists, links, bold and italic, tables, quotes and images with their alt text, without the styled spans, inline styles, empty lines and Google redirect links. You also get a Markdown version, a preview, a count of what was removed and a short list of links, images and headings to check. Markdown and plain text work too. It runs in your browser and does not change your words.

How it works

  1. 01

Copy the text in Google Docs, Word or a web page and paste it into the box, or open an .html, .md or .txt file.

  2. 02

Choose what happens to the document title and which clean-up options to use, such as removing empty paragraphs or adding ids to headings.

  3. 03

Copy the clean HTML into your website editor's HTML or code view, or copy the Markdown, then fix anything the checks find, such as images without alt text.

Why pasted text needs cleaning

A copy from Google Docs carries a style on almost every word: fonts, sizes, colours and line heights, wrapped in span tags, and bold and italic are often styles rather than tags. Pasted into a website editor, this code can override your site's design and makes pages heavier. The tool keeps the meaning (a heading, a list, a bold word, a link) and drops the rest.

What Google says about links, images and headings

Google can only crawl a link written as an <a> element with an href, so every link in the clean version is written that way. Google uses alt text, along with computer vision and the text of the page, to understand images, so images without alt text are flagged. Google's SEO Starter Guide says headings help people find their way in long content, and that heading order does not matter for Google Search but helps people using screen readers.

What this tool cannot do

It does not move images: images copied from Google Docs still point to Google's servers, and images pasted from your computer get placeholder names, so upload them to your site and change their addresses. Colours, fonts, alignment, columns, comments and suggested edits are left out on purpose, and footnotes lose their links. In a Docs web page download, each nested list level becomes its own list. Markdown tables cannot merge cells. Read the result before you publish.

Frequently asked questions

Is my document uploaded?

No. The text is read in your browser. Pasted code is parsed in a separate document that is never shown, so scripts in it do not run and its images are not loaded. Your last text and options are saved in this browser only.

Why does the box show code after I paste?

When you copy from Google Docs, Word or a web page, the clipboard carries HTML code along with the text. The box shows that code, so you can see what the tool cleans. To paste plain text only, use your browser's paste-as-plain-text shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+V in Chrome and Edge on Windows).

Where do I paste the clean HTML?

Into your website editor's HTML or code view, for example a Custom HTML block or the code editor in WordPress. Pasted into a visual editor, it shows up as code. The HTML uses only basic tags, so your site's own styles decide how it looks.

What happens to the Docs title and Heading 1?

A line in the Docs "Title" style becomes an H1 by default; you can make it an H2, or leave it out when your website adds the page title as the H1. If your document uses Heading 1 for its sections, turn on "Move every heading down one level" so they become H2s. One H1 per page is our checklist; Google sets no ideal number of headings.

Can it turn Markdown into HTML, or HTML into Markdown?

Yes. Type or paste Markdown and the tool writes HTML; paste rich text or HTML and it writes Markdown as well. It reads headings, lists, links, images, bold, italic, quotes, code and tables in the GitHub style with pipes. HTML written inside Markdown is kept as text.
