About the British and American Spelling Checker

Paste a page, blog post, email or ad and choose the spelling style you want: British with -ise, British with -ize, or American. The tool marks every word from our list that is spelt the other way (colour or color, organise or organize, centre or center, travelled or traveled, licence or license, and more than 300 other words with their usual endings), counts the British and American spellings, warns you when they are mixed, and gives you a fixed copy with the case of each word kept. Web addresses, e-mail addresses, code and the names you list are left alone. It runs in your browser, and your text is not uploaded.

How it works

  1. 01

Paste your text, or press Try an example to see a sample page with mixed spelling.

  2. 02

Choose British (-ise), British with -ize, American, or whichever style your text uses most. Add brand names or places that must keep their spelling.

  3. 03

Read the marked-up text and the words to check by hand, then copy or download the fixed copy.

How the tool decides

It looks up each word in our own list of spelling pairs: -our and -or, -ise and -ize, -yse and -yze, -re and -er, -ogue and -og, -ence and -ense, double or single l, ae or oe and e, and others such as grey and gray or aluminium and aluminum. Some words depend on how they are used, and our list follows common British use: licence is the noun and license the verb, practice the noun and practise the verb, a programme is a plan but a program is software, a metre is a length but a meter measures, and a storey is a floor. For these, the tool reads the words around them and asks you to check when it cannot tell.

British with -ize

Some British publishers use -ize endings. Oxford University Press house style, for example, takes -ize, -ization and -izing for British style but keeps -yse words such as analyse. Choose "British with -ize" to follow that style. Whichever style you pick, use it everywhere: on the page, in the title, in the meta description and in your ads.

What this tool cannot do

It is not a full spell checker. It only knows the words in our list, so typing mistakes and grammar are not checked. It cannot always tell a name from an ordinary word, so a capitalised word in the middle of a sentence (Color Plus, Lincoln Center) is only flagged, never changed. Words that depend on use are judged from the words next to them, which is not always right. Read the fixed copy before you publish it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use British or American spelling?

Use the style your readers expect and your brand already uses, and keep to it. We have not found any Google guidance that prefers one style. Google's guidance on helpful content asks whether content has "spelling or stylistic issues", and a page that switches between colour and color can look careless.

What does "mixed spelling" mean here?

Your text has words that no single style spells that way, for example colour (British) with center (American). Colour with organize is not mixed, because British with -ize uses both. The tool shows how many words fit each style and picks out the ones to change.

Why are some words marked "check by hand"?

Some spellings depend on meaning. In British English you hold a trade licence but license a product, a training programme is a plan but a computer program is software, and practice is the noun but practise the verb. When the nearby words do not show which it is, the tool asks you to decide. Capitalised words in the middle of a sentence are also marked, because they may be names.

Does it change names and web addresses?

No. Web addresses, e-mail addresses, domain names, code, HTML tags, hashtags and @handles are left alone, and so is anything you add under "Words to leave alone". A capitalised word in the middle of a sentence is listed to check by hand rather than changed.

Does it work with Hindi or Hinglish text?

Yes. Text in Devanagari and other scripts is left exactly as it is, and only English words are checked. Hinglish words written in English letters are not in our list, so they are never changed.
