About the Lakh, Crore and Rupee Formatter
Type a number the way you have it: 12,34,567, 1,234,567, 1.2 million, 12 lakh, ₹3.5 crore or 2.5 bn. You get it in Indian and international grouping, in lakh, crore, million and billion, as short forms such as 12.35 L, and in words in English and in Hindi, ready for a cheque, an invoice or an article. The second tab checks a whole article or post for amounts written in different ways, such as ₹ next to Rs. and INR, 1,200,000 next to 12,00,000, or lakh next to million, and writes a fixed copy in the style you pick. The maths is done digit by digit in your browser, so long numbers stay exact, and nothing you type is uploaded.
How it works
-
01
Type or paste a number or amount, or pick one of the examples. Commas, decimals, ₹, Rs., INR and words such as lakh, crore, million and bn are all read.
-
02
Copy the form you need: Indian or international grouping, a short form, the number in English or Hindi words, or rupees in words for an invoice.
-
03
To tidy an article, open Check an article, paste the text, pick how you write rupees and large numbers, and copy the fixed text.
Lakh, crore and million
A lakh is 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand) and a crore is 100 lakh, or 1,00,00,000 (ten million). So 10 lakh is 1 million, 100 crore is 1 billion and 1 lakh crore is 1 trillion. Indian grouping puts a comma after the last three digits and then after every two (12,34,567); international grouping uses groups of three (1,234,567). Hindi words for 1 to 99 do not follow a simple pattern (उनतालीस is 39, उनचास is 49), so the tool writes them from a full table, not from rules.
What the article check looks for
Rupees written more than one way (₹, Rs., Rs, INR or the word rupees), Indian and international grouping in the same text, lakh and crore next to million and billion, a space after ₹ or none after Rs., "/-" after amounts, "lakhs" and "crores" after a number, numbers stuck to the unit (12lakh), commas used as decimal points (3,5 crore) and dots used to group (1.234.567). The rupee symbol ₹ was approved by the Union Cabinet in 2010 and the RBI gives it as the symbol of the Indian Rupee (INR). The style rules themselves are our suggestion.
What this tool cannot do
It reads numbers written in digits, not numbers written in words, and it does not convert currencies or check whether a figure is correct. Hindi number words have regional spellings (छह or छः, पचानवे or पंचानवे); the table uses common forms, so check them against your own style. In the article check, a number in an unusual form may be missed or marked for you to check by hand, and "L" and "K" are read as lakh and thousand only straight after ₹, Rs. or INR, because "7 L" is often litres.
Frequently asked questions
How many lakh make a million, and how many crore make a billion?
10 lakh make a million (10,00,000 = 1,000,000) and 100 crore make a billion (1,00,00,00,000 = 1,000,000,000). One crore is 10 million, and one lakh crore is one trillion. Type any figure into the tool to see it in every unit at once.
Should I write ₹, Rs. or INR?
The RBI gives ₹ as the symbol of the Indian Rupee, and INR as its short name. Any of them is clear; what matters is using one in a text. Our suggestion for articles: ₹ with no space before the number (₹4,500), and INR where a currency code reads better, such as next to USD.
Is it 12 lakh or 12 lakhs?
Both are seen in Indian English. Our suggestion is to keep lakh and crore the same after a number (12 lakh, 3 crore), like million (2 million). The article check changes "lakhs", "lacs" and "crores" after a number to lakh and crore; you can ignore that line if your style guide says otherwise.
How do I write an amount in words for a cheque or invoice?
Type the amount and copy "Rupees in words", for example "Rupees twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred and sixty-seven only", or the Hindi line, for example "बारह लाख चौंतीस हज़ार पाँच सौ सड़सठ रुपये मात्र". Paise are rounded to the nearest paisa. Check your bank's own rules for cheques.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The number and the article are read in your browser and saved only in this browser, so they are there when you come back. Press Clear to remove them. The tool does not use AI.
