How to use the Brand Style Guide Builder and Checker

Read what the guide says

This is the Brand Style Guide Builder and Checker.

Write your brand's style rules once, then check every draft for the name, words, spelling,

dates and claims.

Fill in the Build tab: brand name, voice, spelling, headings, numbers, money, dates, words to avoid,

claims and formatting. The voice buttons add lines you can edit. Or try the example.

Or press Try an example to fill in sample details.

Copy the guide as text or Markdown, download or print it,

or save it as a .json file to import on another computer or send to your writers.

Open Check a draft, paste a page,

post or email and fix what is marked. Copy the fixed copy,

then rework the claims and long sentences yourself.

It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

Try it free on this page.

Runs in your browser. Your guide and drafts are saved only in this browser.

Every rule here is yours: type how your business writes, and the guide below updates as you go. The voice buttons only add example lines for you to edit.

Your brand name

Fine to use after the first mention.

Separate with commas. The check also finds the name in the wrong case, or with spaces or hyphens added or taken out.

Voice and readers

Add a trait (adds two lines you can edit)

Spelling and headings
Spelling
Headings

British with -ize follows Oxford University Press house style: organize, but analyse.

Used by the heading, capitals and spelling checks. Separate with commas.

Numbers, money and dates
Large numbers
Money
Dates
Words and claims

One per line. Use →, -> or |. Advice in brackets, or two choices such as "use / try", are shown but not changed for you.

Claims you cannot prove. For every other claim of fact, use the Claims and Sources Checker.

Formatting

GOV.UK's writing guidance suggests splitting sentences over 25 words. Type 0 for no limit.

Your style guide

Type your brand name to start

Your guide appears here as you fill in the form: name, voice, spelling, headings, numbers, words to avoid, claims and formatting. Or press Try an example.

About the Brand Style Guide Builder and Checker

Type how your business writes: the brand name and the wrong ways people write it, your voice and readers, British or American spelling, heading case, how you write numbers, rupees and dates, words to avoid with what to use instead, claims you never make and formatting rules. You get a style guide to copy as text or Markdown, download, print or save as a small file for your writers. Then paste any draft on the second tab to see where it breaks your rules, with a fixed copy. Every rule is your own: the tool writes them down and checks with fixed rules, not AI, in your browser.

How it works

  1. 01

Fill in the Build tab: brand name, voice, spelling, headings, numbers, money, dates, words to avoid, claims and formatting. The voice buttons add lines you can edit. Or try the example.

  2. 02

Copy the guide as text or Markdown, download or print it, or save it as a .json file to import on another computer or send to your writers.

  3. 03

Open Check a draft, paste a page, post or email and fix what is marked. Copy the fixed copy, then rework the claims and long sentences yourself.

Why a written style guide helps

When several people write for one business, the same name, price or date ends up written three ways. A style guide settles each choice once: Smile Studio Dental, not SmileStudio; ₹4,500, not Rs. 4500/-; 31 October 2026, not 31st Oct. Google's guidance on helpful content asks whether a page has spelling or stylistic issues, and readers notice them too. The rules in this tool are yours; it only writes them down and checks drafts against them.

What the check looks for

Words to avoid, with your replacement; the brand name in the wrong case or with spaces added or taken out; British or American spelling, with the word list from our British and American Spelling Checker; headings in sentence or title case; Indian or international number grouping; rupee amounts; dates; claims on your banned list; and contractions, capitals, emoji, exclamation marks and long sentences if your guide says so. Changes with one clear answer go into a fixed copy.

What this tool cannot do

It checks words and patterns, not meaning, so it cannot tell whether a sentence sounds like your brand or whether a claim is true. It may miss a heading in plain text or flag a name written in capitals; add names and acronyms to the list to stop that. Spelling is checked only for the words on our list. It does not write or rewrite your copy, and it does not use AI.

Frequently asked questions

What should a brand style guide include?

At least how to write your name, who you write for, how you want to sound, which spelling you use, how headings are written, how you write numbers, money and dates, words to avoid with what to say instead, and claims you never make. Keep it short enough that writers read it: for a small business, one or two pages is plenty.

Should an Indian business use British or American spelling?

Either works if you use it every time; we found no official rule for businesses. Pick the style your team and customers already use. British with -ize is a third option, used in Oxford University Press house style: organize and realize, but analyse. The check marks words from our list that are spelt the other way.

Should I write lakh and crore or million?

Pick what your readers use. Indian grouping (1,00,000) goes with lakh and crore; international grouping (100,000) goes with million. The check finds the other style and converts it for you: 1,000,000 becomes 10,00,000, and 2 million becomes 20 lakh.

Why keep a list of claims we never make?

Some claims are easy to write and hard to prove, such as "100% painless" or "best dentist in Pune". ASCI's Code asks that advertisements are truthful and that claims of fact can be substantiated. Listing the ones your business cannot back up stops them slipping into new copy. For every other claim of fact, use the Claims and Sources Checker.

Can my writers use the same guide?

Yes. Save the guide as a .json file and send it to them; they open this page, choose Import a guide and pick the file. The guide is also saved in your browser, so it is there when you come back on the same device. Nothing is uploaded to our server.
