Before GST: the amount you keep before costs.

Your selling prices are

An MRP on packaged goods already includes all taxes (Legal Metrology rules), so if you sell at MRP, choose "Including GST".

GST rate

The main GST rates since 22 September 2025 are 5% and 18%, with 40% for a short list of goods; some goods are nil-rated. Not registered for GST? Choose 0%: you do not charge GST, and enter costs as you paid them, since you cannot claim the GST on them back.

Several products at once

For each product, type the cost and the selling price (before GST, as chosen above), a target margin, or both. Leave the GST box empty to use the rate above. Up to 50 products.

Import a CSV file or paste a table

Columns: product, cost, selling price, target margin %, GST % (a heading row is optional). Importing replaces the rows above.

About the Profit Margin & Markup Calculator

Type any two of these four numbers: what one unit costs you, your selling price, your margin or your markup. The calculator works out the other two, the profit on each unit and the price with GST, whether your prices are before GST or include it. It shows margin and markup side by side with your own numbers, a table of prices for margins from 10% to 60%, and a section for many products at once, typed in rows or opened from a CSV file. It runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Pick the two numbers you know, such as cost and price or cost and the margin you want, and type them.

  2. Step 2

Say whether your selling prices are before GST or include it, and choose the GST rate.

  3. Step 3

Read the margin, markup, profit and prices, check the table of target margins, and add your other products below to download them all as a CSV file.

Margin and markup are not the same

Both start from the same profit: the price before GST minus the cost. Margin divides that profit by the selling price, markup divides it by the cost. A product that costs ₹60 and sells for ₹100 before GST makes ₹40: a 40% margin, but a 66.7% markup. Adding 40% to the cost gives only a 28.6% margin, which is why a shop that prices by markup and reports by margin often earns less than it thinks.

GST and your margin

GST you collect is not your income, so the calculator works out margin and markup on the price before GST. If your price includes GST, it takes the GST out first, to the paisa, the same way as our GST Calculator. An MRP on packaged goods already includes all taxes. If you claim input tax credit on what you buy, enter costs before GST; if you are not registered for GST, you cannot claim it back, so enter costs as you paid them.

What this tool cannot do

It works out gross margin on each unit only: rent, salaries, delivery and advertising are not taken out unless you add them to the cost. It does not know what your products cost, what GST rate they carry or what your competitors charge. It is not tax advice: check the GST rate for each product with your CA.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate profit margin?

Take the cost away from the selling price before GST to get the profit, divide the profit by the selling price, and multiply by 100. A box of sweets that sells for ₹500 before GST and costs ₹350 makes ₹150, and 150 ÷ 500 × 100 = a 30% margin.

How do I work out the selling price for a margin I want?

Divide the cost by (1 − the margin as a decimal). For a 30% margin on a ₹350 cost: 350 ÷ 0.70 = ₹500 before GST. Do not add 30% to the cost: 350 × 1.30 = ₹455, which is only a 23.1% margin. The table of target margins does this for 10% to 60%.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. For the same product, markup is always the bigger number. A 25% margin is a 33.3% markup, and a 50% margin is a 100% markup.

Should I enter prices with or without GST?

Either. Choose "Including GST" if your price is what the customer pays, for example your MRP or counter price, and "Before GST" if you add GST on the bill. Margin is always worked out on the price before GST, because the GST goes to the government.

Can I check all my products at once?

Yes. Add each product with its cost, selling price and a target margin in the section below the calculator, or open a CSV file with those columns. You get each product's margin and markup, which ones are below their target, the price that would reach it, and a CSV file to download.
