About the COD Pincode Risk Analyzer

Paste or open an orders export from your shop, marketplace or shipping app with the PIN code, payment method and final status of each order; the order value, date, city, State and courier help too. The tool works out the return-to-origin (RTO) rate of cash on delivery (COD) and prepaid orders for each PIN code, area and courier, and with your own product, shipping and return costs it finds the PIN codes where COD loses money. You get a list of PIN codes to make prepaid-only or to ask for part payment, our estimate of the money saved a month, and CSV files to use in your shop or shipping settings. It runs in your browser: the export and the buyer details in it are not uploaded or saved.

How PIN codes are judged

For each PIN code the tool counts the COD orders sent and how many came back undelivered, and works out the profit on a COD order sent there with the COD and RTO Cost Calculator's maths: sales from delivered orders, minus product cost, shipping both ways, packing, the COD fee and the stock you cannot sell again. Where that profit is below zero, our suggestion is prepaid only; where the RTO rate is within 5 points of that line, our suggestion is to ask for part payment. Cancelled orders and orders not delivered yet are left out, and customer returns after delivery count as delivered.

Small PIN codes and areas

A rate from a handful of orders can swing a lot, so a PIN code with fewer COD orders than your minimum (10 unless you change it) is judged together with the other small PIN codes that share its first three digits, and then its first two. The Department of Posts numbers PIN codes so that the first digit is the region, the first two digits the sub-region or postal circle, the first three the sorting district and the last three the delivery post office. The same digits group the results by area, next to State, city and courier.

What this tool cannot do

It does not sign in to your shop, a marketplace or a courier, and it cannot change your COD settings: each platform has its own setting and file format, so check its help pages before you upload the list. It cannot tell why a parcel came back, and a rate from one month may not last. The saving is our estimate and depends on how many buyers would pay online instead, which you set. Fees and courier prices are yours to enter; none are built in. This is not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is RTO, and why does it matter for COD?

RTO means return to origin: a parcel that was not delivered and comes back to you, for example because the buyer refused it, could not be reached or gave a wrong address. You pay shipping both ways and earn nothing on it. The tool shows how much more often your own COD orders come back than your prepaid ones, PIN code by PIN code.

Which export can I use?

Any orders export you can save as CSV or copy from a spreadsheet: from your shop, a marketplace's seller panel, a shipping app or a courier. It needs the PIN code, the payment method and the final delivery status of each order; the order value, date, city, State and courier help. The tool matches columns by words in the header and you can change any match. If your export marks an order complete when it is sent rather than delivered, use your courier's final status instead.

What do the digits of a PIN code mean?

A PIN code has six digits. According to the Department of Posts, the first digit is the region, the first two digits the sub-region or postal circle, the first three the sorting or revenue district, and the last three the delivery post office. There are nine PIN regions: eight geographical ones, with 9 kept for the Army Postal Service.

How is the saving worked out?

For each PIN code marked prepaid only, the tool assumes a share of its COD buyers (50% unless you change it) pay online instead, so you gain the difference between a prepaid and a COD order, and that the rest do not order, so you stop losing money on them. It adds these up and divides by the months your export covers. It is our estimate, and the page shows the range from no one paying online to everyone doing so.

Is my orders export uploaded?

No. The export is read in your browser, on your device, and buyer names, phone numbers and addresses in it are never saved or sent anywhere. Only your cost settings are kept in this browser for next time. The CSV files you download hold PIN codes, counts and rates only.
