About the Package Label Checker (Legal Metrology)
Type what is printed on your pre-packed product: who made, packed or imported it, the product name, net quantity, MRP, unit sale price, dates and consumer care details, and tick what your online listing shows. The tool says which declarations the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 ask for are there or missing, checks how the net quantity, MRP and unit sale price are written, works out the unit sale price from the MRP, and gives you tidy label and listing text to copy. It runs in your browser, and it is not legal advice.
What the Rules ask for
The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 list the declarations a pre-packed product must carry: the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or importer, the country of origin for imported goods, the common or generic name, the net quantity in SI units, the month and year of manufacture, the MRP in rupees inclusive of all taxes, the unit sale price, a best before or use by date for goods that can become unfit for human consumption, and consumer care details: the name, address, telephone number and email, if there is one, for complaints. Under an amendment in force from 1 January 2018, goods a seller shows on an e-commerce platform must carry the same declarations.
Rules and our checks
Each check says whether it is required by the Rules, as the Department of Consumer Affairs and PIB summarise them, or is our own check, such as the PIN code in the address, the spelling of unit symbols and the online price against the MRP. The unit sale price is given per g under 1 kg and per kg from 1 kg, and the same way for ml and l and for cm and m; the figures are our maths from your MRP and net quantity. The month and year of manufacture and the unit sale price have been required since a 2021 amendment that came into force in 2022, and garments and hosiery sold loose or open are exempt from some declarations.
What this tool cannot do
It cannot tell whether your product counts as a pre-packed commodity or whether an exemption applies (the Rules do not cover packages above 25 kg or 25 litres, apart from cement, fertiliser and farm produce in bags above 50 kg, or goods for industrial or institutional buyers). It does not check the size and placement of the declarations on your label, or any other labelling rules that may apply to your product. It does not sign in to any seller account. It is not legal advice: check with your lawyer, CA or the Legal Metrology office before you print labels.
Frequently asked questions
What must be printed on a packed product sold in India?
The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules ask for the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or importer, the common or generic name, the net quantity, the month and year of manufacture, the MRP inclusive of all taxes, the unit sale price and consumer care details, plus the country of origin for imported goods and a best before or use by date for goods that can become unfit for human consumption. The tool checks each of these. Check the Rules for your product before you print.
Do I have to show these details in my online listing?
Yes. Since 1 January 2018, goods a seller shows on an e-commerce platform such as a marketplace must carry the declarations the Rules require. Put them in the listing's detail fields, not only in the photos. On your own shop, showing the same details on each product page is our suggestion. The Legal Metrology office has sent notices to e-commerce companies for missing country of origin declarations.
How should I write the net quantity?
As a number with an SI (metric) unit: the Rules allow no other system of units. Use weight for solids, volume for liquids, or a count, which can be written as number, unit, piece, pair or set. Our checklist suggests the SI symbols g, kg, ml and l, such as "250 g" rather than "250 gms", and one definite figure, not "approx." or a range. The tool gives you a tidied version.
What is the unit sale price?
It is the price for one unit of measure, shown on the pack next to the MRP. The Rules give it per g for packs under 1 kg and per kg from 1 kg, and the same way for ml and litres and for cm and metres. For example, ₹450 for 250 g is ₹1.80 per g. The tool works it out from your MRP and net quantity and checks the figure you have printed.
Is this legal advice?
No. The tool follows the Rules as the Department of Consumer Affairs and PIB summarise them, and marks the rest as our own checks. Whether your product is covered, any exemptions, and the size and placement of each declaration are set by the Rules themselves. Check with your lawyer, CA or the Legal Metrology office before you print labels or change listings.
