About the MSME (Udyam) Category Checker
Type your investment in plant and machinery or equipment, your turnover and the part of it that comes from exports, and pick what the business does. You get the category under the limits in force from 1 April 2025, with the investment test and the turnover test side by side, how much room is left before the next category, what happens if your Udyam certificate shows another category, what to keep ready for registration and what the category is used for. It runs in your browser.
How it works
-
Step 1
Pick what the business does and how it is set up and, if you already have Udyam Registration, the category on your certificate.
-
Step 2
Type the investment in plant and machinery or equipment, the total turnover and the export turnover, as in your income tax return and GST returns. Amounts such as 85 lakh or 2.4 crore work.
-
Step 3
Read the category from both tests, see how close the next limit is, and follow the steps: register free on the Udyam portal, or update your details there.
The limits in force from 1 April 2025
Notification S.O. 1364(E) of 21 March 2025 raised the limits. A micro enterprise has investment in plant and machinery or equipment of up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover of up to ₹10 crore; a small enterprise up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore; a medium enterprise up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore. The same limits apply to manufacturing and services. Both tests count: crossing either limit of a category moves an enterprise up to the next one, and it moves down only when both figures fit the lower category.
How investment and turnover are counted
Exports of goods or services are left out of turnover. All GST registrations under one PAN count as one enterprise, so their figures are added together. Udyam takes investment and turnover from the income tax return and GST returns linked to your PAN; a new enterprise that has not filed a return yet declares its own figures. Land, buildings, furniture and fittings are not plant and machinery, and a Ministry of MSME clarification says to use the written down value at the end of the financial year, not the original cost.
What this tool cannot do
It applies the limits to the figures you type. It cannot read your returns, work out the written down value of your machinery or see your Udyam record, and the figures the portal takes from your returns decide your category. It does not cover the rules of loans or other schemes. Limits and rules change by notification, so check udyamregistration.gov.in. It is not legal or tax advice: check with a CA or lawyer.
Frequently asked questions
What are the MSME limits for micro, small and medium enterprises now?
From 1 April 2025 (notification S.O. 1364(E) of 21 March 2025): micro, investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore; small, up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore; medium, up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore. Before that the limits were ₹1 crore and ₹5 crore for micro, ₹10 crore and ₹50 crore for small, and ₹50 crore and ₹250 crore for medium.
Is Udyam Registration free?
Yes. Registration on udyamregistration.gov.in is free, online and based on self-declaration, with no documents to upload. The portal says it is the only official website for MSME registration and warns about fake sites, so do not pay a website or agent that looks like it.
Can traders register as MSMEs?
Yes. Since an Office Memorandum of 2 July 2021, retail and wholesale traders can register on Udyam, but their benefit is limited to priority sector lending from banks. They cannot use the MSMED Act delayed payment route through MSME Samadhaan, and they are not covered by the Public Procurement Policy for micro and small enterprises.
What happens when my business grows into the next category?
Crossing either limit moves you up. Under the 2020 notification you keep your current status until one year after the close of the year of registration, and since a notification of 18 October 2022 you keep the non-tax benefits of your earlier category, such as public procurement and delayed payment protection, for three years from the date of the upward change. If your figures fall, you move down only when both fit the lower category, and the new status applies from 1 April of the next financial year.
Why does the category matter?
The delayed payment rules of the MSMED Act, 2006 protect only micro and small suppliers with Udyam Registration: a buyer must pay within the period agreed in writing, never more than 45 days from acceptance, or owe interest at three times the RBI bank rate. The Public Procurement Policy sets a yearly target of 25% of central government purchases from micro and small enterprises, which also get tender sets free and do not pay earnest money. Check any other scheme's own rules.
