About the GST Invoice and Quotation Generator

Fill in your business, the buyer and the items, and get a clean A4 tax invoice, bill of supply, quotation or proforma invoice. The tool works out CGST and SGST (or UTGST) or IGST from your State and the place of supply, takes discounts off before GST, writes the total in words in lakh and crore, and checks the details Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists before you print or save a PDF. It runs in your browser: your business details and invoice numbers stay in this browser, and buyer details are not saved.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Choose the document, then fill in your business details once: name, address, GSTIN, State, bank details, UPI ID and logo. They are kept in this browser for next time.

  2. Step 2

Add the buyer, the place of supply if it is not the buyer's State, and each item with its HSN or SAC code, quantity, rate, discount and GST rate.

  3. Step 3

Fix anything the checks flag, choose Print or save as PDF, then start the next invoice to move to the next number.

What a GST tax invoice shows

Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists what a tax invoice shows: your name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive serial number of up to 16 characters (letters, numbers, hyphens or slashes), unique for the financial year; the date; the buyer's name, address and GSTIN if registered; the HSN code for goods or the accounting code for services; a description; the taxable value after discounts; the rate and amount of each tax; the place of supply with the State's name for supplies between States; whether tax is payable on reverse charge; and a signature. For an unregistered buyer and a taxable value of ₹50,000 or more, it also shows the delivery address with the State's name and code.

Tax invoice, bill of supply, quotation or proforma

A registered business making a taxable sale issues a tax invoice. A registered person supplying exempt goods or services, or paying tax under the composition scheme, issues a bill of supply instead, with no GST (CGST Act, section 31(3)(c); Rule 49 lists its details), and under the composition scheme it carries the words "composition taxable person, not eligible to collect tax on supplies". A quotation or proforma invoice is not a tax invoice: issue the tax invoice when you make the supply. Rule 48 asks for goods invoices in three copies, marked for the recipient, the transporter and the supplier, and for service invoices in two.

What this tool cannot do

It does not do e-invoicing. Since 1 August 2023, businesses with aggregate turnover above ₹5 crore must issue e-invoices (Notification 10/2023-Central Tax), with some exemptions; this tool cannot report an invoice to the Invoice Registration Portal or add its IRN and QR code. It does not keep a record of the invoices you issue, cover exports, credit notes or compensation cess, or tell you which GST rate or HSN code applies. It is not tax advice: check rates, codes and invoice rules with your CA.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a GST invoice for free?

Fill in your business details, the buyer and the items here, pick the GST rate for each item, then choose Print or save as PDF. In the print window, choose "Save as PDF" as the printer. The tool works out CGST and SGST or IGST and the total in words, and nothing you type is uploaded.

Should my invoice show CGST and SGST, or IGST?

If your State and the place of supply are the same, charge CGST plus SGST at equal rates, half each, or UTGST instead of SGST in a Union territory such as Chandigarh or Ladakh. If they are in different States, charge IGST at the full rate. The tool picks the right one from your State and the place of supply.

What is the rule for invoice numbers under GST?

Rule 46 asks for a consecutive serial number of up to 16 characters, in one or more series, using letters, numbers, hyphens or dashes and slashes, unique for the financial year. A number such as INV/26-27/001 fits. The tool keeps your next number in this browser and moves to it when you start the next invoice.

How many HSN digits must my invoice show?

Under Notification 78/2020-Central Tax, from 1 April 2021, a tax invoice shows 4 digits of the HSN code if your aggregate turnover in the previous financial year was up to ₹5 crore, and 6 digits above that. Up to ₹5 crore, you may leave the code off invoices to unregistered buyers. Ask your CA for the right code for each item.

Is a proforma invoice a tax invoice?

No. A proforma invoice or a quotation tells the buyer what they will pay before the supply, and the tool prints "This is not a tax invoice" on it. When you supply the goods or services, issue a tax invoice, or a bill of supply if you supply exempt goods or services or pay tax under the composition scheme.
