Or press Try an example to fill in sample details.

About the Shopping Title Optimizer

Upload or paste your Merchant Center product feed, choose what you sell and the order you want, such as brand, product, size and colour. The tool rewrites every title in that order using only the words already in the title and the values in your feed's brand, colour, size, material, pattern, gender and age group columns, so it never makes up a detail. It takes out promotional text, prices, symbols and capitals, flags titles over 150 characters, missing details and titles that variants share, and shows each title before and after. Accept, reject or edit each one, then download a supplemental data source with id and title, or the whole feed. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Export your feed as a tab-separated or CSV file (in Google Sheets: File › Download › Tab-separated values) and drop it here, paste it, or press Try an example.

  2. Step 2

Choose what you sell to get a suggested order, then tick, untick or move the parts until the titles read well.

  3. Step 3

Check each title before and after, untick or edit the ones you do not want, then download the supplemental source and add it in Merchant Center.

Built on Google's title guidance

Merchant Center accepts titles of up to 150 characters, but Shopping ads and free listings show only about the first 70, so Google asks you to put the most important details first. It asks for no promotional text, prices, shipping details, symbols or capitals used for attention, and for each variant's own details, such as colour or size, in its title as well as in its own attribute. For clothing, Google suggests the brand, then the product type, then attributes such as colour, size, material and pattern. The orders for other kinds of shop are our suggestion.

Why a supplemental source

A supplemental data source adds or updates attributes, such as title, for products already in your main feed, matched by id. It cannot add or remove products, so your main feed stays as it is and you can go back by removing the source. In Merchant Center Next it needs the Advanced data source management add-on. Attribute rules decide which source's value is used, so check a few products after the upload.

What this tool cannot do

It only uses the words in your titles and the values in your feed's columns, so a title can only be as good as your data. It does not shorten long titles or rewrite the wording inside them: rows still over 150 characters are flagged for you to edit. It cannot see your product pages or images, and the promotional word list and the capitals check are our checklist, not Google's exact rules. Google reviews titles after you upload them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best order for a Google Shopping title?

Put the details shoppers look for first. For clothing, Google suggests the brand, then the product type, then attributes such as colour, size, material and pattern, plus gender or age group when the picture does not make it clear. Google's own example turns "Nexus 7 tablet in black with 32 GB of storage" into "Nexus 7 tablet, 32 GB, black". The tool starts you with a suggested order for your kind of shop, and you can change it.

How long can a Merchant Center title be?

Up to 150 characters. Shopping ads and free listings show only about the first 70, depending on the screen, so keep what the product is and its key details at the start. The tool shows the first 70 characters of each new title in dark text.

Will the tool add colours or sizes my feed does not have?

No. A detail only goes into a title when your feed has it in its own column, such as color or size, or the title already says it. If your feed has no colour column, add one with the real values and run the tool again. Values such as N/A in the brand column are left out.

How do I upload the new titles to Merchant Center?

Download the supplemental source file, which holds id and title. In Merchant Center, turn on the Advanced data source management add-on under Settings › Add-ons, then open Settings › Data sources › Supplemental sources and choose Add supplemental product data. Upload the file or connect a Google Sheet, and pick your main feed as the primary source. Or replace your main feed with the full feed download.

Can I use attribute rules instead?

Yes. Merchant Center attribute rules can build a title from several columns, such as brand and title, inside Merchant Center. This tool helps when you want to see every title before and after, take out promotional text and edit titles one by one before anything changes.
