How to use the Conversion Lag Calculator

Read what the guide says

This is the Conversion Lag Calculator.

See how many days your Google Ads conversions take,

so you do not judge a campaign or a change too early.

In Google Ads,

segment the Campaigns table by Conversions › Days to conversion for a date range that ends at least 30 days ago,

and download it, or press "Try an example".

Or press Try an example to fill in sample details.

Drop the file here or paste it,

or type the conversions for each row. Add your conversion window,

bid strategy and a recent figure if you want them checked.

Read the curve and the 90% day, leave those days out when you judge results,

wait the days shown before judging a change, fix the window if flagged,

and copy the summary or download the CSV.

It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

Try it free on this page.

Your Days to conversion report

Rows for several campaigns are added up. You can also type lines such as "<1 day, 40" and "14 to 21 days, 12".

When your file has a Conversion action column.

Runs in your browser. Your report is not uploaded, and we never sign in to Google Ads.

About your account (optional)

The click-through window on the conversion action: 1 to 90 days.

Sets how many conversions to wait for: 30, or 50 for Target ROAS.

Read from the date row of a downloaded report when you leave these blank.

Conversions Google Ads shows for that period today.

Getting the report

  1. 1 In Google Ads, open Campaigns (or Ad groups, or Search keywords) and pick a date range that ends at least 30 days ago, or longer ago if your conversion window is longer. Three months gives more to work with.
  2. 2 Click Segment, then Conversions, then Days to conversion. Keep the Conversions column, and Conv. value if you use values.
  3. 3 Download the table and drop it here, or copy and paste it.

Row labels can differ between accounts and downloads; the tool reads the common ones.

About the Conversion Lag Calculator

Paste or upload a Google Ads report segmented by Days to conversion, or type the conversions in each row. The calculator shows the share of conversions that has come in by each day after the click, the days by which 50%, 80% and 90% have arrived, how complete yesterday's and last week's figures are, and how long to wait before you judge a change, built on Google's Smart Bidding guidance. It also checks your conversion window against your lag, adds a note on data exclusions, and gives a summary and a CSV. It runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Step 1

In Google Ads, segment the Campaigns table by Conversions › Days to conversion for a date range that ends at least 30 days ago, and download it, or press "Try an example".

  2. Step 2

Drop the file here or paste it, or type the conversions for each row. Add your conversion window, bid strategy and a recent figure if you want them checked.

  3. Step 3

Read the curve and the 90% day, leave those days out when you judge results, wait the days shown before judging a change, fix the window if flagged, and copy the summary or download the CSV.

Why recent days look worse

Google Ads reports a conversion on the date of the click, not the date it happened. When people take days or weeks to decide, the latest days have not had time to convert yet, so their cost per conversion looks higher and their ROAS lower than they will end up. Google's Days to conversion segment splits your conversions into up to 19 rows by how long they took, and this tool turns those rows into a curve.

How long to wait

Google suggests leaving out recent days in which under 90% of conversions have been reported, judging a target change over one or two conversion cycles, and measuring over at least two full cycles with at least 30 conversions (50 for Target ROAS). The calculator puts your own numbers on those rules: the 90% day, your conversion cycle (the day by which 80% are in, our measure) and the days to wait after a change.

What this calculator cannot do

It works on the report you give it and assumes the pattern holds, so a sale, a new campaign or a change of conversion action can shift it. The milestones, the conversion cycle, the wait and the adjusted figures are our measure, spreading each row evenly over its days; they are not Google's figures. Smart Bidding campaigns show Google's own estimate of conversions still to come in the bid strategy report. The tool never signs in to Google Ads.

Frequently asked questions

What is conversion lag in Google Ads?

The time between a click on your ad and the conversion it leads to; Google calls it the conversion cycle. Because Google Ads reports conversions on the date of the click, a conversion that happens 10 days later is added to the day of the click, so recent days keep filling in for a while.

Where do I find the Days to conversion report?

On the Campaigns, Ad groups or Search keywords page, click Segment, then Conversions, then Days to conversion. It splits the conversion columns into up to 19 rows. Google suggests a date range that ends at least 30 days ago, or longer ago with a longer conversion window, so late conversions are in.

How long should I wait before judging a change?

Google suggests judging a target change over one to two conversion cycles and not making several changes within one cycle. Then add the days it takes for 90% of conversions to come in, because the last days of any period are still filling in. With a lag of a few days that can be about two weeks; for property or B2B leads it can be two months or more.

What conversion window should I use?

Google allows a click-through conversion window of 1 to 90 days and recommends at least 7 days. Conversions after the window are never counted. If many of your conversions still arrive near the end of the window, a longer window lets Google Ads count them; the calculator flags this when 10% or more come in during the last quarter of the window (our measure).

Why are yesterday's conversions so low?

Because people who clicked yesterday have only had a day to convert. The calculator estimates the share of conversions in so far for yesterday and the last 7, 14 and 30 days from your own lag, and what to multiply a recent figure by. It is an estimate from your history, not a forecast.
