About the Conversion Goals Auditor
Paste the conversion actions table from Google Ads and answer a few questions about your business. The auditor checks each action, and the account as a whole, against Google Ads Help: which actions are Primary and used for bidding, the same sale tracked by your tag and by Google Analytics, page views or button clicks set as Primary, leads counted "Every", sales without values, short windows, retired attribution models and actions that have stopped recording. It runs in your browser.
How it works
-
Step 1
In Google Ads, open Goals › Conversions › Summary and copy the table of conversion actions, or press "Try an example".
-
Step 2
Paste it, then say what your ads bring in, what a real lead or sale is for you, and whether you import offline sales or GA4 key events.
-
Step 3
Work through the do-these-first list with the fix steps under each check, then download the findings or copy the summary.
Why these settings matter for Smart Bidding
Smart Bidding aims for the actions that are Primary in the goals your campaigns use. If a page view is Primary, it looks for people who browse. If the same sale is tracked by your Google Ads tag and imported from Google Analytics, each sale counts twice and your cost per sale looks half of what it is. Google removes duplicates only inside one conversion action, so these mistakes have to be fixed by hand.
What the checks are based on
The rules come from Google Ads Help: Primary and Secondary actions, "One" for leads and "Every" for sales, click-through windows of 1 to 90 days with at least 7 recommended, view-through windows of up to 30 days, data-driven attribution as the default, and statuses such as Unverified and No recent conversions. Checks marked "our checklist", such as a WhatsApp button click set as Primary, are our own suggestions.
What this tool cannot do
It reads only the table you paste, so it cannot see your tags, which goals each campaign uses, or whether two actions really fire on the same page. Duplicate checks work from names, categories and sources, so confirm them in Google Ads before you change anything. It never signs in to Google Ads, and after a goal change Smart Bidding needs time to learn, in most cases one to two conversion cycles.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between primary and secondary conversion actions?
Primary actions are counted in the Conversions column and used for bidding in the campaigns that use their goal. Secondary actions are for observation only: they show in All conversions but do not steer bidding. Set your real leads or sales as Primary, and keep steps such as page views or add to cart as Secondary, as Google advises.
Should a lead form count One or Every?
Google advises "One" for leads, such as a sign-up or enquiry form, because only one conversion per ad click usually adds value; a second form from the same person is rarely a second customer. For sales, Google advises "Every", because each purchase adds value. A change applies to conversions from then on, not to past figures.
Why are my Google Ads conversions higher than my real leads?
Usually something is counted twice or counts too much: the same purchase tracked by a Google Ads tag and imported from Google Analytics, two actions on one thank-you page, a lead form counted "Every", or a page view or button click set as Primary. This auditor flags each of these. Google sets actions created from Analytics key events to Secondary by default to avoid double counting.
Which attribution model should I use?
Data-driven attribution is Google's default for most conversion actions, and last click is still supported. Google no longer supports the first click, linear, time decay and position-based models, and actions that used them were moved to data-driven. If an older export still shows one of those models, open the action in Google Ads and check its setting.
How long should the conversion window be?
Google allows a click-through window of 1 to 90 days for Search, Shopping and Display, and a view-through window of 1 to 30 days, and recommends at least 7 days. Pick a click-through window that covers how long your customers take, which the Days to conversion segment shows. For sales you import from a CRM, a short window can drop most of them.
