Check up to 10 product pages from your shop's sitemap for markup, price, stock, titles and alt text.

How to use the Store Product Audit

Read what the guide says

This is the Store Product Audit.

It checks up to 10 product pages from your shop's sitemap, in one go.

Use it after you add products, or change your theme or shop apps.

It picks up to 10 pages from across your sitemap, not just the first few.

Enter your shop's home page, or the address of its product sitemap.

Here, we press Try an example: the sitemap of a made-up tea shop.

Press Audit my shop. We find your product pages and open them one at a time.

The score is our checklist, not a Google measure.

Here, three product pages were found through the sitemap, and all three were checked.

Start with this box. It lists the fixes that matter most across your products.

Here, number three: one product page has no Product markup at all.

These bars show how many of the pages have each part.

Product by product, you see what needs work, and the CSV has the details.

Open How to fix to see why it matters and the steps.

Product markup gives Google the name, price and stock in a form it reads directly.

Check your platform, theme or SEO plugin first: many add Product markup.

Make sure the markup is in the HTML your server sends, then run this check again.

Then check one page in detail with the Product Page Checker.

You can also email yourself a PDF of the result.

How it works

  1. Enter your shop's home page, such as https://yourshop.com, or your product sitemap's full address. Press Try an example to fill in our sample sitemap.

  2. We read robots.txt and your sitemaps to find product pages, then open up to 10 of them, one at a time, and check each page's markup, price, stock and search basics.

  3. Fix what is flagged across products, worst first, download the table as a CSV, and check one page in detail with the Product Page Checker.

About the Store Product Audit

Enter your shop's home page, or the address of its sitemap. We find your product pages from robots.txt and your sitemaps (Shopify's product sitemap, WordPress and WooCommerce product sitemaps, or addresses with /products/ or /product/ in them), open up to 10 of them, spread across the list, and check each the way the Product Page Checker does: Product structured data, offer, price, currency, stock, brand and GTIN or MPN, shipping and return policies, and whether the marked-up price is shown on the page. Across the products we compare titles and meta descriptions, and count images without alt text, noindex pages and short descriptions. On WooCommerce shops we also read the public Store API for a catalogue summary. Nothing signs in to your shop admin.

How the audit finds your products

Google can find a sitemap from a "Sitemap:" line in robots.txt, so we look there first, then at the usual addresses such as /sitemap.xml. Shopify makes a sitemap by itself at the root of your shop, with separate sitemaps for products, collections, blogs and pages, and leaves out products set to Unlisted. From a sitemap index we read the product sitemaps; otherwise we take addresses with /products/ or /product/ in them, or the product links on your home page. WooCommerce has a public Store API that lists products without a login; we use it when no sitemap helps, and for a catalogue summary.

What is checked on each product

Each page gets the Product Page Checker's rules: an Offer with a price above zero and a three-letter currency for merchant listings, a stock status, a brand with a valid GTIN or an MPN, shipping and return policies on the product or shop-wide in Organization markup (on the page or your home page), and whether the price in the markup appears in the page text (our check). Across products we look for titles and meta descriptions that are missing or shared, titles over 70 characters and descriptions under 50 words (our measures), images without alt text, noindex, canonical links and pages blocked by robots.txt. The score is our checklist, not a Google measure.

What this tool cannot do

It checks a sample of up to 10 product pages, not every product, and stops opening pages before the server's time limit, so a slow shop may get fewer. It reads the HTML your server sends without running JavaScript, reads JSON-LD but not microdata, and does not measure image sizes. It cannot see shipping or return policies set in Search Console or Merchant Center, and Google decides whether to show a rich result. It is for your own shop, not for Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho listings, and it never signs in to your shop admin.

Frequently asked questions

How many products does the audit check?

Up to 10 product pages, spread across the list we find, so a long sitemap is not judged by its first few products. We open them one at a time and stop before the server's time limit, so a slow shop may get fewer. For a full check of one product, including the size of its main image, use the Product Page Checker.

Where does it find my product pages?

In the sitemaps named in your robots.txt, or at the usual sitemap addresses such as /sitemap.xml. Shopify makes this sitemap by itself, with a separate sitemap for products. From a sitemap index we read the product sitemaps. If no sitemap lists products, we use the product links on your home page, or the WooCommerce Store API. You can also enter a product sitemap's address directly.

Why are some of my products marked noindex?

noindex tells search engines not to show a page. On Shopify, a product set to Unlisted gets noindex and is left out of the sitemap, so check the product's status in your admin. A theme setting or an SEO app can also add noindex. If a product should be found in Google, remove the noindex and request indexing in Search Console.

Do shipping and return policies have to be on every product page?

No. Google lets you set them once for the whole shop in Search Console, in Merchant Center or with Organization markup (hasShippingService and hasMerchantReturnPolicy), and use product markup only for exceptions. We read each product page and your home page, so a policy in Organization markup there counts. Policies set in Search Console or Merchant Center are not visible to us.

Does it work for marketplace listings?

No. It works with any shop whose product pages are public, such as Shopify and WooCommerce shops, as long as it can find the product addresses. Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho pages and their markup belong to the marketplace; check your listing text with the Marketplace Listing Checker instead. If a shop blocks automated visits, the audit cannot read it.
